Rally Report – Cornhusker Rally 2013

The July rally went to Hoopeston this year. A few months before I had heard about Henning’s Root Beer Stand. People had said the food was pretty good. Cheryel and I tried it a few times while laying out the rally. It was better than the usual fast food.

We had seven cars for the rally with a bigger Nav class than usual. The route took the entrants through a large area of windmills on their way to Potomac. We went through the town on the way to checkpoint two. Potomac just happened to pick that day for their fourth of July parade. I missed it going to man the checkpoint but it caught every team on their way. They had to pause for the parade to end and turn in delay slips at the checkpoint. It did not seem to affect the times though.

There was six checkpoints, three before the break and three after. Russ Bedford worked the odd numbers and I worked the even ones. One of the Novice teams dropped out after the first checkpoint with a sick navigator. The other Novice team made a mistake on the first leg but after a phone call to me I managed to get them to the second checkpoint. They ran the rest of the rally without incidents. This was their first time and have since run several more. They keep getting better every time.

Our Nav class consisted of the Townsends, the Demeritts, and Jonathan Flora and Kevin Morris. We haven’t seen Kevin for a while and this was the first time they have run as well as the first time in Nav. They had their act together though as they won the class.
