Winding River Roads III Report

The weather cooperated for a change for this year’s running of the Winding River Roads Rally. After a summer of very dry and hot conditions, it cooled down enough and rained enough to keep the dust under control. In all, it turned out to be a pleasant day for a rally.

Nine teams showed up for the rally and the picnic that followed. We had first time Rallyists, the Jordan family, as well as some veteran teams from years ago. Harold and Karen Davis from Terre Haute were active in CCSCC in the 70s and 80s, as were Opal and Paul Trapp. Paul was my navigator and co-rallymaster years ago, as well as the builder of many things on my Pro-Rally car. It was good to see all of them back in the game.

The rally route took the entrants down some of the most interesting roads east of the Champaign area. Most of the roads were paved, but several gravel roads were still dusty, and turned once shiny cars into looking like they badly needed a wash. Due to errors in the instructions, the second and the seventh legs were discarded from the scoring.

A picnic of bratwurst and other tasty food prepared by Karen and Tom followed, and trophys were awarded to the victors.
