Summer Preview Rally Report

Well….. what should I say? It was a beautiful night and 7 teams showed up. 5 Nav and 2 seat of pants. The ODO leg went well but I messed up instruction 18, so instead of arriving at the checkpoint, everybody headed out to Savoy and questioned my sanity trying to hold a CAST of 52 in a 45 speed limit. Parkland Scholarship Autocross May 1, 2010

Although he weather looked all week like it wasn’t going to cooperate, it proved to be a good day. The lot dried out completely from Friday night’s rain and although it threatened to rain several times during the event it managed to not rain on our fun. Sixty seven drivers braved the bad forecasts and came to the event. The lot was slightly bigger than the one we used last year and we were able to lay out a challenging course, avoiding the light poles and staying away from the curbs. The competitors were divided into 13 regular classes, including a ladies class, and the novices into 5 classes. BS was a five car class and was won by Greg Lukach in his 96 Gran Sport Corvette, with a time of 32.220 which was the fastest time of the Day, earning Greg the FTD award. CS and ES were bumped together and was won by Adrian Astorina. He can be fast when he doesn’t hit any cones. He bested John Li but John was on street rubber and Adrian was running on race rubber. John turned in the fastest time indexed on street tires and took home the FTDis award. FS was a three car class and was won by Brian Grable with Sandy only 0.633 behind. GS and HS were bumped together and was won by Adam Deffenbaugh with a 33.972. This performance earned Adam the FTDis award. SS, ASP and CSP were combined and provided a very close race. Russ Bedford won the class with a 32.408 with Kerry Riley breathing down his neck a mere 0.121 seconds behind him. ESP was a three car class and was won by me with a time of 33.947. Steve Wright won the DP & XP combined class in his 92 Miata. STR and ST were bumped together to form a 5 car class. Clark Walker edged out John Gnuechtel by the slim margin of 0.181.

Nick Owens continued his streak in STX which was bumped together with STU. He ran a best time of 33.588. The street modified classes were bumped together to form two classes. The first was SM and SMF and Beau Renshaw turned in the best time in this class of 32.517. Tom Ingles won the SSM class of 5 cars with a 32.670. The ladies class was won by Linda Hicks with a indexed time of 31.817.

The novice bumped class of BSN, SSN and DSN was won by Tim Noice with a time in his Porsche Boxter S of 36.001. ESN, GSN and HSN were combined to make 7 car class and was won by Alex Kim in his Saab 9-5. ASPN and DSPN was a 2 car class and was won by Devin Wright with a 35.431 which ends his eligibility as a novice. Congratulations Devin, now you can play with the big boys. All the Street Touring Novice classes were bumped together to make a 7 car class. It was won by Luke Brunka with a 37.051. All the street modified classes were also combined to make a 5 car class. Scott Spear won the class in his Subaru WRX. He completed the course in 35.518.

Tour DeWitt II Rally Report

The second installment of the highly renowned Tour DeWitt series of rallies was Sunday, April 25, 2010. This year’s version accomplished what I wanted to do with the first one, which took place in September 2008. That was an actual circumnavigation of Clinton Lake. The weather partially cooperated for this event, at least it didn’t rain and both days were sunny but still a bit chilly. The course on Saturday could best be described as a bid by polar. The first half flowed quickly from turns and offsets to fast five cone slalom feeding into a shortened big sweeper. From there you made a hard left turn that feed into a shorter slalom and then to a tight 180 turn and then the courses personality switched abruptly. It tightened up and required a lot of steering movement with curves and offsets to the finish.
We had fifty five cars on Saturday SS and BS were bumped together to form a four car class and was won by who else but Russ Bedford in his Corvette ZO6 who turned in a 46.532, the second fasted time raw time on Saturday. CS, DS and ES were bumped together to form another 4 car class and was won by John Lee in his Miata even though he had forgotten to bring the right lug nuts for his race wheel and tires so he was running on his street tires . John completed the course in a raw time of 46.992 which when indexed yield a 38.414 which earned John the FDTis award. So much for being forgetful John. FS was a battle between four Mustangs and Brian Grable came out on top. Sandy was out of town and I guess this proves that Brain is ready to go solo in their Cobra.
GS and HS were bumped together to form another 4 car class (do you see a pattern here). Adam Deffenbaugh in his GS Mazda 3 turned in the top time of 48.611 to beat out 3 GS competitors. Three street prepared cars were present and were bumped together. Too bad for Doug Sellers and I as were could not match the excellent performance turned in by Eric Stemler in his ASP Corvette who turned in the fastest raw time of 43.052 and the best indexed time of 37.498 and took home the FDTi shirt. There we nine street touring cars and they were divided into three classes. Evan Geske took the honors in a borrowed car in ST with a time of 51.139. STR was a three car class and was won by Aaron Williams who won in Clark Walkers BMW Z3 despite Clarks attempt to sabotage the car by loosening one of the coolant hoses. He ran the course in 47.211 seconds.STX and STS were bumped together to make a three car class and was won by Nick Owens in his RX8 who turned in a very fast 47.004. This computed to the second fastest indexed time on Saturday. Street modified was divided into two classes. SM, SSM and SMF bumped together and SSML. The bumped SM class was run by Beau Renshaw in this entirely reworked Evo with as 46.929, which was the third fastest raw time on Saturday. SSML was won by Cathy Burkholder driving Roberts Honda S2000.
Twenty two novice drivers came on Saturday and were divided up into6 classes. ASN, BSN and CSN were bumped together to make a 3 car class. William Nagy’s first run was his only clean run but it was good enough to stand up for the class title. Matthew Hicks won the three car class of DSN and FSN in his BMW 330i. GSN and HSN were grouped together for a 5 car class which was won by Alex Kim in his Saab 9-5 with a best time of 51.012. STXN and STN were bumped together and this 4 car class was won by Sean Roosevelt in a Subaru WRX. There were four STUN cars and the class was won by Alan Au in a Subaru STi with a time of 48.070. The final novice class was STRN and SMN bunped together. Kevin Rose won the class with a best time of 55.724.

I made several changes to the course on Sunday and open up the tight part and made it all one style, faster and flowing better. Forty two drivers braved the very chilly morning to compete. BS, CS DS, FS and GS all were their own class. There were 3 drivers in BS and Greg Lukach won with a fastest time of 45.753. Unfortunately Barry Rowe had to scratch after only two runs when the seatbelt in his car refused to unbuckle. CS was a battle of two Mazda and Jason Kositarut won in his RX8. IN DS there were three competitors and the class was won by Paul Okarma with a time of 47.559. Brain and Sandy Grable fought it out in FS and Brian beat Sandy by only 0.143 Watch out Brain she is getting very close. I think I see another purse in your future. GS was won by Brent Kalman in his Acura turning in a best time of 48.204. Brent also turned in the fastest indexed time on street tires on Sunday.
ASP and SS were bumped together and Eric Stemler again showed us all how it was done, turning in a blistering 41.754 to win the class and FTD and FTDi. He chose the FTDi shirt for his award. The next fastest time was turned in by Russ Bedford in his Corvette, a 45.620 and he took home the FTD shirt. ESP was a four car shoot out with Ben Volmer in his 95 Mustang winning with a best time of 46.564. Tim Mahler won the two car CP competition in his 65 Corvair with a 49.231. Nick Owens continued to win the STS, honors besting three Hondas and winning with a time of 45.171. STU was a four car class and was won by Alan Au in his Subaru STi who bested his nearest competitor by almost a full second. Mark Stoeven won the SM & SMF bumped class with a time of 48.627. SSM was a four car class and was won by Tom Ingles in his turbo Miata with a best time of 45.112. ESN, CSN and FSN were combined to make a three car class. Stuart Ford won the class in his Miata with a time of 48.779. HSN was a two car class and was won by Christian Lucerno in a Honda CRX . He ran the course in 53.326. The final novice class was SMN and STUN bumped together and was won by Ken Au with a 48.508.

April “Who Speaks”

It is a great year!  A great year so far!  Lets see what we have done so far.

We have held four rallies, five autocrosses, an autocross school and a TestNTune.

We have purchased a new timing system (that is really great!), we have more members than ever before at this time of the year and our social events are already arranged for the  year!

Midnight Run III Rally Report

Seven teams showed up to try their luck with the latest edition of the Midnight Run Rally Series. This broke down into 4 Seat O’the Pants, 1 Novice and 2 Navigational Teams. The Rally took place on a warm clear evening early in April. Unfortunately, we lost one team along the way. The other 6 teams finished and met at the Monical’s on Mattis for trophy presentations.
