Halloweenie Road Rally Report

The October 29, 2010 Halloweenie Friday night rally was without some of the tricks that I’ve pulled before but still kept the entrants busy. Unfortunately we only had four teams that showed up but we still had one novice team. There was some gravel used that night. Some places were just patches of gravel but there were three long stretches that were defined as a gravel road. The rule was a gravel road required a reduction in the Cast to 30 miles an hour and a resumption of the original Cast when the gravel road was finished.

The last stretch was about three miles long which would have taken around six minutes. They were also instructed for that section to pause a half minute for each metal grain silo they encountered. After a mile they came to a crossroad with a metal grain silo. One mile later they found six metal silos in a row. The calculated time for that three miles of gravel was 9.59 minutes. I could of beat them on a bicycle. Here are the results.

Even though the novice team maxed two legs they still made it to all the checkpoints. For a first rally that can be a feat in itself. The Sop battle was very close. There was only a ten point difference between them. Ten points equates to a difference of six seconds for the entire rally. The Nav team must have just had bad luck for the night. It isn’t often the overall winner is an Sop team.

I thank everyone who ran the event and also my wife Cheryel for helping to lay out the rally. I also want to thank Jim Hamilton and Bill Wagner for working the first checkpoint. Jim also cold ran the rally the week before the event.

This is my last Halloween rally. After putting on this rally for about twenty years I’m running out of ideas. I have turned it over to the Grables who have expressed the desire to try their hand at tricking the rallyists. Good luck guys.

Piatt County Passage Rally Report

On November 21st seven teams ventured west to run the Piatt County Passage. The late date had me concerned in the planning stage about the potential of snow. I needn’t have worried, however, as the weather turned out to be unseasonably mild. The course crisscrossed the Sangamon River six times, covering many of twisty and crooked roads on either side.

Starting from downtown Monticello, the route took the contestants into the northeast quadrant of Piatt County, on a brief excursion into Champaign County just southwest of Mahomet, and then brought them back to Monticello via White Heath. After a rest break the route took them west for a trip around the outskirts of Allerton Park, then northeast again for another loop through White Heath with a final checkpoint just south of the back side of Lodge Park. The teams and workers then retired to Three Ravens on the Monticello Square for drinks, food, banter, and awards.

5 teams competed in the S.O.P. class. At the break the team of Bob Townsend and Jonathan Flora held a slim lead over Russ and Chris Bedford, 82 to 86. The Bedfords took the lead on the 4th leg, however, and held on to win 125 to 145.

Two teams went head to head in the Equipped Class. Chuck and Judy Hanson had the misfortune of being distracted by a hunter on a quad-runner at a critical speed change point on leg two. They weren’t able to completely recover and took a 23 on the leg, ending up with a final score of 37. Bob and Marianne DeMeritt were consistent throughout, taking the class and overall victory with a score of 16.

I had hoped to attract some Novices and wrote a very conservative rally with many (too many?) course following hints and a leisurely timetable. Unfortunately none showed. I think next year I’ll make this event a bit more challenging for the veterans.

Many thanks to my wife, Angela, for all her assistance, and also to Kim Johnson for assisting with checkpoint operations.
