Independence Day Foliage Tour Rally Report

Date: July 4, 2012
Rallymaster: Barry Rowe

I want to thank the ten rally teams that competed in my July 4 rally. They seemed to have fun, even though the day was hot. Very hot…

Thanks also to Jonathan Flora for the cold run and working checkpoints.

The rally was a long rally that went from Champaign to Clinton over some really nice roads, including the scenic Clinton lake area. It was also the first CCSCC rally in many years that had a “Gimmick” class, which is now called the “Adventure” class. These entrants only had to remain within five minutes of ‘on time’, but answered questions along the way. As long as they were within five minutes of the correct in time (to keep them from stopping at each sign), they were scored on the answers to their questions.

This rally was originally going to be held in November of 2010, then November of 2011, but was cancelled both times due to a lack of enough entrants. However, it was held this time with a great turnout.

They all did a good job and seemed to have a good time. There were some problems with the rally and two legs were thrown because of mileage problems. It just shows that you shouldn’t rerun a two year old rally but rather start from scratch. So many things had changed and I made a change at the last minute that also caused a problem.

I enjoyed sharing the rally with the ten teams. Thanks to all for running the rally.

As you can see there were some very good scores. I’ll try to write up more later this week but the scores for a couple of the teams need a quick explanation right now.

First, in the Navigational Class the DeMeritts rally odometer failed somewhere before the end of the odometer comparison section so they dropped out after reporting in at the first checkpoint.

Second the Paul Grunchich – Mark Hamman team made it to every checkpoint location. They were there trying their hardest and learning a lot. You can bet they’ll do better next time.
